Eleven-year-old Moon Blake (Jimmy Bennett) has spent his life hiding out in the forests of Alabama with his father, an anti-government radical, but everything changes when his father unexpectedly dies and without his guidance Moon is quickly discovered by land owner, Mr. Wellington (John Goodman). Thinking he is doing what is best for the boy Mr. Wellington turns him over to a reform school. Moon meets other boys and learns about friendship but is determined to get back to the forest. He escapes from school, bringing his friends Kit (Uriah Shelton) and Hal (Gabriel Basso) with him. But when misfortune finds them, Moon begins to question his father’s beliefs, and starts to discover that the civilian world may be the perfect place for him.
